Release of MDE V1.4 - Significantly Enhances Ability to
Create Powerful Relational Database, Data Warehouse, and
Data Marts Using FileMan-based MUMPS Data
Peabody, MA, January 2001 – Strategic Reporting Systems (SRS) announced today the release of MDE™ V1.4 (MUMPS Data Extractor). Through MDE™, users are expanding the scope, style, and type of solutions being produced for the benefit of their medical center, clinicians, multiple medical centers, and enterprise. MDE™ is making possible their ability to reach beyond the perennial MUMPS IT barriers to join with third party application developers producing a new class of contemporary solutions. In response to this proliferation of new solutions, MDE™ has expanded its functionality to accelerate the union of FileMan-based MUMPS data with mainstream applications and contemporary technologies.
MDE™ V1.4 – added a NEW option to extract the internal value (pointer) of fields that can be used to create relationships between data or tables within the database. As one MDE user commented, “We can now easily complete a Web-based multi-facility RDBMS-based data warehouse that permits us to accurately, efficiently, and on a daily basis produce analysis and reports that our executives can use to proactively manage the financial, clinical, pharmaceutical, and daily operations of our individual medical centers or the entire complex of medical facilities.”
MDE™ V1.4 retains the ability to resolve the internal value (pointer) to its data representation. For example, MDE™ V1.4 can, i.) Resolve an internal value (pointer) Pat_Name to the actual patient’s name, i.e. John Doe, or ii.) Expose that internal value (pointer) within the database, i.e. Pat_Name, and link it to another table or field, thus producing an integrated relationship used in architecting a data warehouse, data mart or RDBMS.
MDE™ (MUMPS Data Extractor) is a COTS (commercial-off-the-shelf) middleware application that natively reads the FileMan-based system, extracts its data, then delivers the data and pre-built SQL tables into any relational data warehouse/mart, database, or application. Unique to MDE™ is it DOES NOT require any underlying M-based SQL, SQL mappings, or M/Cache programming to be performed at the site. Within 60 minutes of installation, MDE™ allows, for example, the Department of Veterans Affairs VistA, DoD CHCS, and other FileMan-based MUMPS system’s data available for use by mainstream technologies, such as data warehouse/mart and ROLAP, or products such as ReportSmith™, Crystal, SAP, desktop office applications (i.e. Excel, Word, Notes, Access), and more.

MDE™ extends the value and life of existing FileMan-based systems, such as the VA’s VistA, DoD’s CHCS, and IHS’s systems. These systems represent the largest healthcare informatics systems in the world.
