SRS Announces New Release of MDE™
-- MDE™ V1.2 --

Peabody, MA, January 2000 – Strategic Reporting Systems (SRS) announced today the release of a MUMPS Data Extractor (MDE™) V1.2. This release represents another major milestone in the development of MDE™ and SRS’ continued commitment to improve the product in response to customer demand.

MDE™ is a COTS (commercial-off-the-shelf) middleware application that natively reads the FileMan-based M/Caché system, extracts then delivers data and pre-built SQL tables into relational data warehouses/marts, databases or applications. Unique to MDE is that it does not require any underlying M-based SQL, SQL mappings, or M/Caché programming to be performed.

Within sixty minutes of installation, MDE™ allows a system’s data to be available for use with mainstream technologies. Examples are data warehouse/mart and ROLAP, products such as ReportSmith®, Crystal®, SAS, or desktop applications such as Microsoft® Excel, Word, Access or Lotus® Notes.

MDE™ V1.2 was enhanced to include – 1) integration of the Department of Veterans Affairs VISTA KIDS installation, 2) enhanced Bulk Copy Procedure, 3) notification to user of erroneous records, and 4) a redesign of the application’s user interface.

David Lenhart, General Manager of SRS, commented, "MDE™ extends the value of existing FileMan-based systems, such as the VA’s VISTA system. These are some of the largest healthcare informatics systems in the world, yet they have remained a closed legacy environment, unable to easily use mainstream technologies. MDE™ allows these healthcare systems to benefit from today’s technology and applications."

These legacy systems contain enormous amounts of data. MDE™ unlocks these data and makes possible the opportunity to convert data into knowledge. By using off-the-shelf applications, MDE™ users can easily create reports, respond to congressionally mandated Performance Measurement Standards, and present their data in ways previously unavailable to them, benefiting not only their healthcare providers, clinicians and management/executives but, most importantly, the veterans themselves.

"Not only did we make MDE™ more attractive and intuitive for the user, but we have built in significant new muscle power," continued Mr. Lenhart. "Early adoption of MDE™ has been principally through VA medical centers, consequently integrating their KIDS installation into MDE™ made tremendous sense. Now MDE™ is a very easy, extensible COTS installation requiring no M/Caché technical experience. Since MDE™ is a natural fit between the M/Caché legacy system and contemporary technologies and applications, our hope is that eventually every VA, Department of Defense (DoD) Health Affairs, and Indian Health Services (IHS), site will have MDE™ installed. We have eliminated the huge cost and burden of implementation for the VA."
